In the evening, locals are less inclined to have a drink with friends before a late dinner, even though there are more and more places to do so. Some examples of their signature dishes are Bacalhou , which is a Portuguese Cod fish usually served with potatoes.
Portugal is also very famous for their sardines and barnacles! Something interesting to know about each culture, is that in Spain it is typical to have meals much later than in Portugal. In Spain locals will usually have dinner around 9 pm and have a siesta or mid afternoon nap where they get to go home and rest.

Yes, you, and the Portuguese, understand Spanish and I would add also Italian far better then they or we do! How comes? You cannot be the same country, for the bunch of reasons that you have listed and also because all these differences make the world a richer place!
