A spokesperson for the Foxtel Group confirmed the pay-tv broadcaster had opted against renewing its deal for the show due to audience decline. Foxtel had previously held Australian premiere rights to season 18 of Ellen, which aired on the Fox Arena channel. Ellen is distributed internationally by Warner Bros. But a rapid descent in TV ratings after reports of a toxic work culture behind the scenes emerged has caused the show to quickly become uneconomical for broadcasters.
The decision by Foxtel comes after the 9 Network confirmed to TV Blackbox on Friday it had also opted not to secure Australian rights to the final season. A network spokesperson stating:. The axing by both broadcasters means Australian fans of Ellen currently have no legal method of viewing the final ever episode of the show when it airs in TV Blackbox understands the Seven Network is highly unlikely to secure the show.
