I still feel that it should be changed to the closest target but that's just my own opinion, and that's beyond a bug.

Not closest. BTW if you use avalanche on a unit and then immediately toss him avalanche will do double damage on him. That is because the damage counter on avalanche will be reset hitting him twice. He just has to land on the area that is being avalanched.
